"The Blues As Greens" is a live improvised performance captured on the winter solstice, December 21, 2022. In addition to drums/percussion, all other sounds were created by plants, including maguey and maracujá species, connected to PlantWave, Ableton Live and Moog synthesizers. the performance is dedicated to all the creatures of the Earth.

“The new musician has been primarily involved in the cultivation of the Marvelous. And he judges his work more by the frequency with which the Marvelous occurs than by compositional values.” - A.B. Spellman

RESPIRATION:RESTORATION was launched with an opening performance on September 26, 2020 featuring a livestream of Spooky Action Labs using PlantWave technology to collaborate with multiple plant species in a Santa Ana, California backyard garden. It was created in recognition that if the problems of police violence, pandemics, and the climate crisis are connected, then the solutions are connected as well. Green spaces create cleaner air; local food sources reorient us towards reciprocity with non-human relatives. Defunding militarized police is balanced by refunding investments into public parks, libraries, and services for the people. These solutions begin to transform an extractive and exploitative economy into a sustainable and regenerative culture. Learn more at www.makaracenterarts.org/respirationrestoration.

Spooky Action Labs at the Gospel Swamp was a musical séance on the summer solstice featuring ghosts, plants, percussion, and electronics. On June 23, 2019, this collaboration with the Heritage Museum of Orange County marked the 150th Anniversary of the City of Santa Ana. Research and recording of the museum’s sounds included instruments such as a 113-year-old piano as well as antique pump organ, Victrola turntable, and the percussive tones of the OC Blacksmith Guild. In the Gospel Swamp nature preserve, sounds were created with PlantWave technology applied to a variety of native species like California Scrub Oak, Black Sage, Arroyo Willow, Chaparral Yucca, and more. This project was supported by the City of Santa Ana—Arts & Culture Office.

Celebrating Alex Odeh on Saturday, April 6, 2019, marked what would have been the 75th birthday of poet and human rights activist Alex Odeh; and the 25th Anniversary of the statue dedicated in his honor at the Santa Ana Public Library. Odeh’s story remains unknown to many, and this event promoted awareness of his work through newly translated readings of Odeh’s book “Whispers in Exile” in English, Spanish and Arabic. PlantWave technology was applied to an olive tree—a universal symbol of peace and a specific symbol of Odeh’s Palestinian homeland—to create a 40-minute ambient soundtrack, “OLLIE,” which accompanied seven readers who recited Odeh's newly translated words. This project was supported in part by the City of Santa Ana - Arts & Culture Office. Special thanks to Helena Odeh and the Odeh family, Ayah Daveed, Hafsa Kaka, Chilo Te, Adriana Sanchez Alexander, Maggie Eid, Omar Zahzah, Rev. Daryl Meyers, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, Santa Ana Public Library, and Makara Center for the Arts.
