spooky action labs reflects multiple identities. we become entangled with many communities, cultures + beings. we make beats.

spooky action labs stages location-specific performances that are custom-designed for different species, the land on which they live, and the stories they have to tell.

spooky action labs makes records with bandmates including plants of various species, cats of specific vintage, and computer-generated algorithms beyond our complete control. there’s a human here too: a musician, writer, and producer named greg camphire.

spooky action labs creates soundtracks to imaginative experiences. our mobile soundsystem welcomes fellow listeners into multimedia performances featuring music, text, and video. we design improvisations/compositions for location-specific events that explore sound, ecology, and culture with collaborators from other creative disciplines such as poets, historians, museum curators, and environmental justice activists.

spooky action labs uses sound design technologies including Ableton Live, Moog synthesizers, and PlantWave—which converts the electrical signals of plants into audible sounds. various plants can become our bandmates, each with their own unique sonic signatures. listening to plants as musicians encourages a shift in consciousness: the realization that these intelligent beings who provide us with oxygen, food, and medicine have their own messages to share.

we continue to make music with plants while entangled in multiple ecological emergencies including mass extinctions, the global rise in fascism, and the struggle for indigenous peoples to get their land back.
